What is Atal Tinkering Lab?

Atal Tinkering Lab (ATL) is an initiative launched by the Government of India under the Atal Innovation Mission (AIM). It is a workspace where young students, in the age group of 12-18 years, can work with tools and equipment to understand the concepts of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) and enhance their innovation skills.

The main objective of the ATL initiative is to foster curiosity, creativity, and imagination in young minds, and encourage them to solve real-world problems using technology. It aims to create a culture of innovation and entrepreneurship in schools across India, and provide a platform for students to develop a hands-on experience in STEM.

Each ATL is equipped with state-of-the-art equipment such as 3D printers, robotics kits, microprocessors, sensors, and other tools for students to experiment and innovate. The students are guided by trained teachers and mentors who help them learn the basics of technology and guide them in their projects.

ATLs are established in schools across India, including in rural areas, to ensure that all students have access to the latest technology and can benefit from the program. The program aims to create a pool of young innovators and entrepreneurs who can drive the growth of the country’s economy and solve some of the most pressing social problems through their ideas and inventions.

  1. Funding: The ATLs are set up with funding from the Government of India under the Atal Innovation Mission. The government provides a grant of up to Rs. 20 lakhs to each school to set up the lab and purchase the necessary equipment.
  2. Curriculum: The ATLs are not restricted to any particular curriculum or syllabus. Students are encouraged to work on projects that interest them and align with their individual strengths and capabilities. The idea is to create an environment that fosters creativity, innovation, and experimentation and allows students to develop their skills and interests at their own pace.
  3. Mentorship: Each ATL is supported by mentors who are experts in the fields of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. They provide guidance and support to the students, help them to identify problems and find solutions, and inspire them to think creatively and innovatively.
  4. Competitions: The Atal Innovation Mission organizes various competitions and challenges for the students of the ATLs to showcase their skills and knowledge. The winners of these competitions are given opportunities to participate in national and international events, where they can interact with other innovators and entrepreneurs and learn from their experiences.
  5. Impact: Since its launch in 2016, the ATL initiative has made a significant impact in the field of education and innovation in India. As of 2021, over 8,500 schools have been selected to set up ATLs, and over 6.5 lakh students have benefitted from the program. Many of the projects developed by the students have received national and international recognition and have been used to solve real-world problems in areas such as healthcare, agriculture, and environmental sustainability.
