The Intelligent Cleaning System for Sterilized Environments

Maintaining cleanliness is the primary step in preventing the spread of hazardous diseases such as dengue, typhoid, and hepatitis. To achieve this goal, a team of students from Kamla Nehru Public School, Kapurthala, Punjab, consisting of Gurjot Singh, Raghav, and Nallamothu Sesha Sai Krishna, came up with an innovative machine. The machine is equipped with advanced features such as brooming, mopping, and the use of disinfectants.

The team participated in the ATL Marathon 2019 competition and was tasked with developing an innovation-led idea to address a social issue. After analyzing their school premises, they noticed that the sweepers had to work continuously to ensure cleanliness, which was a strenuous routine. Therefore, the team’s initial idea was to develop a prototype that would help ease the sweepers’ workload by automating the cleaning process. The machine would prove useful in schools, offices, and hospitals.

However, in response to the rising health concerns due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the team added the disinfectant feature to their prototype and focused their efforts on hospitals. The machine is powered by an artificial intelligence system that analyzes and interprets the cleanliness of pre-defined areas within its operational universe. When litter is spotted, the AI system categorizes it as dry or wet waste, and the machine takes the corresponding action. Additionally, the machine’s disinfectant system is time-based and is activated at regular intervals.

The machine is equipped with various sensors and microcontrollers to ensure its proper functioning. The team is currently working on an updated version of the prototype. The team’s participation in the ATL Marathon 2019 competition helped them learn new things and approach problem-solving creatively. They also had the opportunity to participate in the AIM-SIRIUS innovation program 3.0, where they interacted with people from around the world and gained valuable experience in marketing, product diversification, and product USP creation.
