Curbing Water Wastage

Two young students' sustainable solution to conserve water and promote a better future

In a world that is facing a serious water crisis, every drop counts. The issue of water wastage is a significant concern, and it requires urgent attention from individuals and organizations alike. However, it is not just adults who are stepping up to tackle this challenge. Two young students from Subodh Public School in Jaipur, Sapna Yogi and Khanak Lashkari, have developed a smart way to curb water wastage with their innovative project, the Smart Tap.

The Smart Tap is a tap mechanism that stops the flow of water automatically once the bucket placed under it is completely filled, regardless of its size. This mechanism ensures zero water overflow and saves water, thereby contributing to the essential sustainable development goals of “clean water and sanitation for all.”

Dr. Manish Jain, their mentor, was instantly thrilled by the concept and encouraged the students to develop the idea further. The students made use of all the technical resources available in India’s ATL Labs to create the Smart Tap, which incorporates a specially created flow monitoring mechanism using Arduino that gets coded to stop the flow of water when the sensors detect moisture.

The metal plate sensor attached to the holding bucket or utensil senses the moisture and activates the closure action, stopping the flow of water at the pipe level itself. This simple but effective mechanism has the potential to save significant amounts of water, and its impact could be immense.

Reflecting on their experience at the ATL Marathon, the students highlighted the platform’s importance for potential innovators to kickstart their journey. The ATL Marathon provides constructive criticism at every stage and helps budding innovators bring their ideas to fruition.

The Smart Tap is a testament to the fact that the younger generation is not just concerned about their future, but also the fate of our planet. It is inspiring to see students take the initiative to develop innovative solutions that have the potential to create a significant impact on society.

The project highlights the importance of leaving the world better than we found it, a principle that should guide our actions towards the conservation of vital resources. When we lead mindful and conscious lives, we develop solutions that benefit not just ourselves but also those around us.

In conclusion, the Smart Tap is an example of how the youth of today can be potent social entrepreneurs of tomorrow. With their innovative ideas and a deep sense of responsibility towards the planet, they can make a significant impact on society’s challenges. It is heartening to see young individuals like Sapna Yogi and Khanak Lashkari leading the charge towards a sustainable future.
