The Smart Maker team embarked on a mission to create innovative solutions for a more inclusive society. They identified a growing need for software systems that could recognize real-time object streams and convert them into speech, specifically for people with visual impairments. With this in mind, the team developed the Smart Cap, a device that helps the blind to visualize their surroundings by detecting objects within a range of 16 feet and converting them into speech.

The team’s inspiration for the Smart Cap came from a visit to the Navchetan Andhjan Mandal in Bhuj, where they witnessed firsthand the struggles of students with visual impairments to navigate their surroundings. Utilizing a circuit and wire-based module fitted with a battery, headphones, cameras, switch, PCB, and ultra-sonic sensor, the team created a cap that makes the device easy and simple to use for the end-user.
Throughout their journey, the team was guided and encouraged by their mentor, Mr. Harsh Gor. Following his advice to “follow the problem-solving cycle,” the team identified the problem, explored possible solutions, and implemented different ways to solve the problem. Mr. Gor’s mentorship enabled the team to showcase a successful project that has the potential to make a significant impact on the lives of visually impaired individuals.
The team’s participation in the ATL Marathon allowed them to meet like-minded individuals and expand their knowledge on various topics related to themes like Renewable Energies, Energy Storage, and Climate-Smart Precision Agriculture. They believe that the ATL Innovation Mission is shaping the next generation of Indian students to become enthusiastic contributors to building a better future through the development of essential 21st-century skills.
Overall, the Smart Maker team’s innovation and dedication to creating a more inclusive society through the Smart Cap is a testament to the power of technology to make a positive impact on people’s lives.
